About Ambrolauri: Ambrolauri is a small mountain town — two thousand-odd people, a bridge over the Rioni and a giant concrete Khvanchkara bottle on the main square — and almost everyone who sleeps here is in Racha for wine, old churches or the road east towards Oni and the high mountains. Good to know before you book
The booking flow is three steps: dates and guests in this page's widget, the live price on app.impt.io, and instant confirmation. Most rooms are offered with free cancellation until a few days before arrival — the exact deadline is shown next to each rate before you pay. Every confirmed booking also removes a tonne of CO₂ through IMPT's carbon-removal projects, at no extra cost to you. When comparing, note that the four-star rating reflects the hotel's declared standard; the guest reviews on this page tell you how it actually feels to stay. Prices on this page are shown in US dollars, converted from the euro rates our scans observed; the exact total for your stay, including any taxes and fees, is confirmed in the booking funnel before you pay.
Where our data comes from
Through 2026 we ran 22 weekly scan rounds against the live IMPT booking funnel, probing one-night stays across the coming weeks for every hotel in this guide. Sazano Wine Cellar returned bookable rates in 1 of the stay windows we probed, most recently in October 2026. Prices you see here are per-night room rates converted to US dollars at the single euro rate used across this site; they are a planning aid, not a quote.
Ambrolauri for hotel guests
It is the region's administrative capital, which mostly means a market, a post office and a couple of ATMs. In our 2026 scans we found seven hotels here, with rooms from about US$157 a night and a median from-price of the same order — a sign of thin supply rather than luxury. Family guesthouses, usually arranged by phone, sit well below that. All hotels in Ambrolauri →

Guest reviews
4.8140 reviewsWe had a decent stay at this hotel. The staff was friendly, particularly in the restaurant, and the food and wine were good. Our room was clean and matched the photos. However, we found the overall atmosphere quite lacking throughout the property. The common areas, pool area, and riverside seating all felt rather empty and uninviting - there's just no real vibe or atmosphere that encourages guests to relax and enjoy the spaces. The pool area especially looked quite sad and unwelcoming. We also encountered a sewage smell on our balcony, which meant we couldn't use the outdoor space. Addition…
I have been second time in this lovely hotel. The rooms were amazing and was matching region &hotel concept. Foods were really very tasty as well as associate were very friendly and smiling. I had chance to meet hotel general manager MR Unay that he was very dedicated. I can say he improving hotel hospitality satisfaction. Because he is very professional and associate can learn many things from him. I really recommend this hotel to all travelers whom really want to rest and want to have local region food.
This hotel is superb! A haven of peace nestled in the middle of the countryside. The restaurant is also very good and the staff friendly, I recommend it!
Planning your trip to Ambrolauri
When to go
Racha has a short, sharp season. Late May and June are the quiet sweet spot: the passes clear, the Rioni runs high with meltwater, guesthouses reopen after winter, and the meadows above Nikortsminda are at their greenest. Rain is frequent, so bring a shell, but you will have Barakoni's carved facade and most restaurant tables to yourself.
September and October are why most people come. The harvest fills the villages, the beech forests turn copper, and the Khvanchkaroba wine festival gives Ambrolauri its busiest weekend of the year, usually in late autumn. In a town with this few hotels, rooms vanish around it; book several weeks ahead and expect weekend rates to hold firm rather than soften.
July and August are warm but never Tbilisi-hot, and weekends bring Georgian families up from the lowlands. Winter is honestly hard work: snow from November, several guesthouses shut, short restaurant hours, and the Zagari pass towards Svaneti closed roughly from November into June. The Nakerala pass road from Tkibuli ices over — check conditions before you drive it.
Getting there and around
Marshrutkas from Tbilisi's Didube station take about six hours for something like 20–25 GEL, run a few times a day and fill up in autumn. From Kutaisi the trip is far shorter — 2.5 to 3 hours, roughly 10–15 GEL — which makes Kutaisi the practical arrival airport for anyone flying in from abroad and heading straight for Racha.
Ambrolauri has a small airfield with seasonal light-aircraft flights from near Tbilisi. They are cheap by air standards but weather-dependent and easily cancelled, so treat them as a bonus rather than a plan. Renting a car in Kutaisi or Tbilisi opens up the region properly: roads are paved but narrow and twisting, with livestock, potholes and blind bends.
In town you walk everywhere — square to bridge to market in ten minutes. For the villages, a few vans run on school-style schedules, so most visitors hire a taxi for the day at roughly 150–250 GEL depending on distance. Fill the tank in Ambrolauri; fuel stations thin out quickly on the roads east towards Oni and the upper valleys.
Where to stay, zone by zone
The centre — the square with its concrete Khvanchkara bottle, the bridge over the Rioni, the bus stop, a market and a couple of ATMs — is the practical base if you arrive without a car. Everything you need is a few minutes' walk away, the evening goes silent by ten, and you can catch a morning van to Oni or Kutaisi without arranging a lift.
Just outside the centre, along the river and up the slopes, are newer small hotels and guesthouses with valley views, gardens and better insulation. They are quieter and generally the more comfortable option, but even a kilometre out of town means either your own car or a host willing to drive you down for dinner and back.
The villages are the real Racha. Tsesi, ten minutes away, sits below Barakoni church above the river confluence; Bugeuli and the Khvanchkara vineyards spread west; Nikortsminda, with its eleventh-century cathedral, stands on the Kutaisi road. Oni, half an hour east, works as an alternative base for the higher mountains. All of these effectively require your own wheels.
Eating and going out
Set expectations first: this is a town with a few restaurants, not a dining scene. Most kitchens stop serving by nine or ten, Sundays are quiet, and in low season your guesthouse dinner may be the only hot meal within reach. It is usually the best food you will eat here anyway, so order it when you check in rather than at seven in the evening.
Eat Racha rather than generic Georgian. The region's cured ham with its thick rim of fat, lobiani baked with beans, thick bean stews, and shkmeruli — chicken in garlic and milk, named after the Rachan village of Shkmeri. Khinkali runs a couple of lari apiece in a simple place, and a bottle of decent village wine from a cellar costs tens of lari.
Drinking means wine, not bars. Semi-sweet Khvanchkara from Alexandrouli and Mujuretuli grapes is the local flagship, hosts pour homemade red by the jug, and a glass in a café is a few lari. There is no nightlife here beyond a supra that runs long. Carry cash: there are ATMs near the square, but village cellars and small shops take lari only.
Booking well
Supply is the whole story in Ambrolauri. Our 2026 scans turned up seven hotels, with rooms from about US$157 a night and a median from-price of the same order — a market so thin that one busy weekend removes most of the inventory. Add the family guesthouses arranged by phone or through hosts and the real bed count is larger, but still modest.
Book well ahead for the late-autumn festival weekends, August weekends and the New Year holidays; midweek in June you can often decide the day before. Message the property directly to confirm it is genuinely open, since winter closures are common and listings are not always updated, and ask about heating, hot water and whether dinner can be cooked for you.
Check the map pin before you commit: several properties listed as Ambrolauri are actually in villages fifteen to thirty minutes out, which is lovely with a car and awkward without one. Confirm pickup from the bus stop or airfield, ask whether cards work, and if you are heading for Oni, the Shovi valley — still recovering from the 2023 landslide — or the high passes, ask your host about road conditions for the week you travel.
