When to go
The sea sets the calendar. Water is comfortably swimmable from roughly late June to late September, with July and August the busiest weeks and September often the best compromise — the sea holds its warmth, the crowds thin after the twentieth, and rooms open up. Before mid-June the Black Sea here is still bracing, whatever the air temperature suggests.
Late April to early June is the prettiest stretch inland: tea slopes at their most luminous, the Botanical Garden at Mtsvane Kontskhi in full bloom, and walking in the Chakvistskali valley without melting. Bring a swimsuit anyway, because hot days happen, but plan the trip around gardens and hills rather than sunbathing.
Be honest with yourself about rain. Adjara is the wettest corner of Georgia and Chakvi sits exactly where wet sea air meets the hills; well over two thousand millimetres fall a year, with autumn the heaviest. Downpours arrive fast, last an hour and clear. August humidity is genuinely heavy. Pack a light rain shell in every single month.
Winter is mild — daytime highs often around 8–12°C — but Chakvi shuts down. A handful of year-round hotels stay open, most guesthouses and beach cafés do not, and the seafront is windswept and empty. It works as a cheap, quiet base with Batumi twenty minutes away; it does not work as a beach holiday.
Getting there and around
Batumi International Airport lies about 20 km south, twenty-five to thirty-five minutes by road outside the August crush. A taxi runs roughly 40–60 GEL depending on how you book it, and ride-hailing apps work well leaving the terminal. There are no direct airport shuttles to Chakvi, so budget for that taxi or change vehicles in Batumi.
Marshrutkas and municipal buses run constantly along the Batumi–Kobuleti highway and will stop anywhere sensible in Chakvi. Flag them from the roadside, expect a fare of a couple of lari, and carry small change. From Batumi the ride takes 25–40 minutes depending on traffic. This is the cheapest and most dependable way in and out.
There is a station on the coastal line and some local trains between Batumi and Kobuleti or Ozurgeti call here, but services are sparse and timetables shift with the season — check on the day rather than building a plan around them. Long-distance trains from Tbilisi terminate at Batumi-Makhinjauri; continue by marshrutka or taxi.
Chakvi is strung out along one road, so how walkable it feels depends entirely on where you land, with the highway and the railway separating the village from the beach. Taxi apps reach here from Batumi but thin out going the other way; local drivers ask around 20–30 GEL into the city. A car earns its keep for Mtirala and Tsikhisdziri.
Where to stay, zone by zone
The seafront strip is the obvious choice: newer apartment-style blocks and hotels facing a dark pebble beach, with the sound of surf instead of trucks. It gives the quietest sleep in Chakvi and the shortest walk to the water. Check where your building sits relative to the railway crossing, because reaching the sand can take longer than the map suggests.
The highway side is cheaper and more practical: buses stop at the door, shops and bakeries are close, and Batumi is one flagged marshrutka away. The trade-off is constant road noise, day and night, on a route that never really quiets. Ask for a room facing away from the highway and check whether the windows are double-glazed.
Inland, the old village climbs towards the tea terraces and the Chakvistskali valley. Family guesthouses up here are quieter, greener and often better value, frequently with home cooking included. You will want a car, or a tolerance for a fifteen-to-twenty-minute downhill walk to the beach and a considerably hotter climb back afterwards.
Consider the neighbours before committing. Mtsvane Kontskhi (Green Cape), a few kilometres south, puts you beside the Botanical Garden on a cliffed shore with small coves. Tsikhisdziri, to the north, has the Petra fortress headland and similar calm. Kobuleti, ten minutes further, offers a long boulevard and many more restaurants; Batumi has everything, at Batumi volume.
Eating and going out
Keep expectations local. Eating in Chakvi means family-run places along the highway and a scatter of seasonal cafés near the beach: grilled meat, river trout, sea fish in summer, and Adjarian dishes worth ordering properly — the boat-shaped acharuli khachapuri, borano, sinori, cornmeal with melting cheese. Khinkali run a couple of lari each; a glass of house wine around ten.
Off season the choice narrows to a few doors that stay open all year, and several of those close early in the evening. Stock up accordingly: small shops in the village, a proper market in Kobuleti, full supermarkets in Batumi. If your room has a kitchen in October or November, you will end up using it.
Nightlife here is the sea and a beer on a terrace. For bars, live music, casinos and late kitchens, Batumi is twenty-five minutes by taxi — reckon 30–40 GEL for a late ride home, and agree the fare before getting in if you are not using an app. Accepting that trade is essentially the point of Chakvi.

A small pool also means availability tightens quickly: through the last fortnight of July and all of August, the better seafront rooms are taken months ahead.
