Khulo for hotel guests
It sits on a shelf above the Adjaristsqali gorge, linked to the village of Tago by a Soviet-era cable car that still swings across the valley. Most people who sleep here are on their way somewhere — Goderdzi Pass, the Beshumi summer meadows, the stone church at Skhalta — or they have come to walk the ridge roads between shingle-roofed villages. Planning your trip to Khulo
When to go
Summer is why most people come. From June to September the meadows above the villages are green and busy with cattle, days sit around 20–25°C and nights turn genuinely cold — bring a fleece even in July. This is also the only stretch when the high side valleys are comfortably walkable without technical gear.
Early August brings the Shuamtoba gatherings at Beshumi, an alpine folk festival with horse racing, wrestling and a great deal of dairy. It is the busiest week of the Upper Adjaran year and the few available beds in Khulo and Beshumi go early. Book weeks ahead or day-trip from Batumi.
September and October are the clearest months: the gorge colours up, the air is sharp, and the pass road stays open until the first serious snow. By November most guesthouses are winding down, buses thin out, and the town settles into its off-season rhythm.
Winter means Goderdzi ski resort, roughly late December to early April, with genuinely deep snow and a small, low-key lift setup. Khulo itself hibernates. Spring, from April into late May, is the least rewarding window: mud, landslide repairs, closed high roads and waterfalls that look better than the driving conditions.
Getting there and around
Marshrutkas from Batumi's bus station are the standard approach, running mostly in the morning and early afternoon, around two and a half to three hours for roughly 10 GEL in 2025 money. Departures back to the coast dry up by mid-afternoon, so confirm the last one the moment you arrive rather than the night before you leave.
A taxi from Batumi generally runs in the 120–160 GEL range and can be shared. Driving yourself is straightforward in summer: the road follows the Adjaristsqali, paved but narrow, with blind curves and rockfall debris after heavy rain. The old arched Dandalo bridge below the road is worth the short stop.
Above Khulo the surface deteriorates. It is roughly 40 km of switchbacks to Goderdzi and Beshumi, an hour and a half in dry weather and not a place for a low-clearance car. The through route over the pass to Akhaltsikhe is realistically a June-to-October proposition and closes with the first snows; in winter, access to the ski resort means a 4x4 or a resort transfer.
In town everything is walkable. The cable car to Tago takes a few minutes and costs almost nothing when it is running. Taxis idle near the square and will do half-day runs to Skhalta or the higher villages. Village minibuses leave at first light and return in the afternoon, so day trips have to be built around them.
Where to stay, zone by zone
The centre of Khulo is the sensible base. From here you are minutes from the bakery, the small market, the marshrutka stop and the cable car station, and you can arrange onward transport face to face. It is not scenic in the postcard sense, but it is the only spot where logistics look after themselves.
Tago and the hamlets on the far side of the gorge give you the view back at the town, cold clean air and near-total quiet. The catch is access: if the cable car is down, you are looking at a long loop by road, so this side suits people with a car or with time to spare.
Goderdzi and Beshumi are seasonal worlds of their own. Goderdzi has ski-focused lodging that comes alive in deep winter; Beshumi is a scattering of wooden summer cottages that essentially closes once the meadows empty in September. Neither is a base for exploring Khulo town — they are destinations, an hour or more away.
The villages — Ghorjomi, Didachara, the Skhalta valley — hold small family guesthouses, usually half board, often beside an old wooden mosque and always with hiking straight from the door. Confirm exactly where the house is before booking; several villages sprawl across kilometres of hillside with no street names to speak of.
Eating and going out
The guesthouse table is the main event here, and it is a good one. Expect Upper Adjaran dairy cooking: borano, cheese-heavy sinori, malakhto, achma, thick kaimaghi with mountain honey, plus whatever came out of the garden that morning. Half board is standard and usually far better value than hunting for dinner in town.
In Khulo itself there are bakeries and a handful of simple cafés along the main road, most of them shut by early evening. Adjarian khachapuri runs roughly 10–15 GEL in 2025 terms and khinkali about 1–1.5 GEL a piece. The market is the place for honey, cheese and dried fruit to take up the mountain.
Upper Adjara is largely Muslim and there is no wine-table culture the way there is in Kakheti. Some shops sell beer, but bars effectively do not exist and drinking is not part of the local evening. Nightlife means a balcony, a thermos and an unpolluted sky — plan your evenings accordingly and dress modestly around village mosques.
Booking well
Our 2026 scans turned up just three properties in and around Khulo and no dependable nightly range, so treat any online listing as a small slice of what actually exists. Prices here are negotiated more than published, and what you pay usually depends on whether meals are included.
A large share of the beds never reach booking platforms at all. Phoning or messaging a guesthouse directly, or asking at a shop in the centre, will surface rooms that no search will show you. Georgian or Russian helps enormously; a translated message with your dates usually does the job.
Book well ahead for the early-August festival days and for winter weekends at Goderdzi, when Batumi empties upwards. At any time of year, confirm the practical things: heating, hot water, whether dinner is on offer, and whether someone can meet the marshrutka if you arrive after dark.
Carry cash. Card acceptance is patchy above the coast and you should not build a trip around finding a working ATM in the mountains. Save an offline map with a dropped pin on your accommodation, and if you are heading to Goderdzi in winter, get the transfer and road conditions confirmed in writing before you travel.
