Ozurgeti for hotel guests
Few people come for the town itself: they stay a night before the summer road up to Gomismta or Bakhmaro, on the way to the magnetic black sand at Ureki and Shekvetili, for the Shemokmedi and Jumati monasteries, or simply because the train from Tbilisi terminates here. The hotel market is small — our 2026 scans found nine properties, with rooms from around US$108 a night and a median from-price of roughly the same order — so family guesthouses do much of the work. 4.73084 reviewsThe hotel I stayed at is truly exceeded all expectations, especially thanks to its absolutely outstanding restaurant. Every dish from breakfast to dinner is crafted with attention to unbelievable flavor, presentation, and ingredient quality. Adding to the atmosphere is a stunning, aquarium in the dining room, filled with vibrant fish, stingrays and sharks! It really brings a sense of calm, elegance, and sophistication to the space. In the evening, under the soft lighting, the ambiance becomes truly magical, turning every dinner into a memorable occasion. I would wholeheartedly recommend this h…
Beautiful hotel with a fantastic pool (I've rarely seen a pool this size 😄) and spacious, clean rooms. The service and staff, always smiling, are worthy of a 5-star hotel. There are various restaurants to suit all tastes, including Georgian, Asian, and buffet options, as well as a Sky Bar serving international cuisine and excellent cocktails. The private beach has umbrellas and loungers included in the price of the hotel, and there's a fantastic outdoor bar for drinks by the sea. We had a wonderful holiday on the Black Sea, staying at this hotel for the second time.
I had the pleasure of meeting an outstanding team member TEKO at Paragraph Hotel, and she truly made my stay unforgettable. From the very first moment, her warmth, professionalism, and attention to detail were beyond amazing. She went above and beyond in every interaction, making me feel so welcomed and cared for. Her kindness, positive energy, and dedication to guests are absolutely exceptional — she is simply the best! It’s rare to meet someone who combines such genuine hospitality with such professionalism, and she represents the hotel in the highest way possible.
Planning your trip to Ozurgeti
When to go
Guria is one of the wettest corners of Georgia, and Ozurgeti sits in the middle of it, so plan around rain rather than temperature. Late May and June are the best weeks: the tea hills are fully green, rivers run high, evenings stay cool, and the coast twenty-odd kilometres away is already warm enough for swimming. September into mid-October is the other sweet spot, with the sea still holding its heat.
July and August are humid rather than scorching, and the damp heat sits on you all day. This is when Ureki and Shekvetili fill with families from Tbilisi, Kutaisi and Batumi, and when weekend rooms on the coast disappear. It is also the only reliable window for the mountains: Gomismta and Bakhmaro are usable roughly from early July to September, with the Gurian horse races at Bakhmaro drawing crowds in August.
Winter is mild — hard frost is rare down in the town — but grey, muddy and genuinely wet, with days of rain in a row. The mountain tracks are under snow, the beach resorts close almost entirely, and some kitchens keep short hours. The compensation is an unhurried, empty town, the drama theatre's season, and the lowest room rates of the year.
Getting there and around
The train is the pleasant way in. Ozurgeti is the terminus of a branch off the Batumi line, and a daily service from Tbilisi takes roughly five and a half to six hours, arriving at a station within walking distance of the centre. Buy the seat online a day or two ahead in summer, when it genuinely fills.
By road, minibuses link Ozurgeti with Batumi in about an hour and a half for something like 8–10 GEL, with Kutaisi in two to two and a half hours, and with Tbilisi in five to six. Batumi airport is around an hour by car and Kutaisi airport an hour and a half to two; a private transfer from either will run well into three figures in lari.
In town you walk — the centre is a handful of blocks around the park, market and theatre. Village and coastal marshrutkas leave from the stand beside the market, with last runs early, often by late afternoon. Taxis cost a few lari for a hop across town; ride-hailing apps are patchy here, so agree the fare first. A car pays for itself for monasteries, tea villages and mountain roads.
Where to stay, zone by zone
Set expectations first. Our 2026 scans picked up only nine hotels in and around Ozurgeti, with from-prices starting near US$108 a night and a median in the same region — a thin, uneven market where a couple of coastal or spa-style properties pull the numbers up. Most of the actual beds here are family guesthouses and apartments, and some never reach the big booking sites at all.
The centre — the park, the drama theatre, the historical museum, the covered market — is where a one-night stop makes sense. You can walk to dinner, to the railway station and to the morning minibuses, and the town is quiet enough that street noise is rarely a problem. Rooms are plain, small in scale and usually family-run.
The coastal strip at Ureki and Shekvetili belongs to Ozurgeti municipality, which is why listings labelled Ozurgeti can sit twenty or thirty kilometres away by the sea. Check the map pin before booking. That strip has the magnetic black sand, the pine woods and the resort stock, but it is strictly seasonal: packed in August, half-shuttered by November.
Out in the villages, guesthouses around Shemokmedi, Likhauri and the tea hills give you home cooking, wine from the barrel and a garden — though you need a car, or a host with one. Higher up, the summer huts at Gomismta and Bakhmaro are exactly that: basic, cold after dark, sometimes on generator power, and reachable only in dry weather.
Eating and going out
Gurian cooking is its own thing. Look for ghomi with sulguni melted through it, nigvziani badrijani, satsivi in the cold months, and Gurian khachapuri — the folded half-moon with egg inside, traditionally a New Year dish but often made on request. Guria is tea country too, and the local wine grape to ask about is Chkhaveri, a pale, delicate red.
Prices are small-town: khinkali around 1.5–2.5 GEL apiece, a solid two-course dinner for two roughly 50–80 GEL with something to drink, a carafe of house wine 10–20 GEL, a beer 5–8 GEL. The market is worth an hour for cheese, greens, churchkhela and local tea, and it makes the cheapest breakfast in town.
Nights are quiet. A few cafés and bars around the centre stay open late-ish, kitchens tend to stop around ten, and anything resembling a club scene is in Batumi. The theatre runs a season from autumn to early summer, almost entirely in Georgian. In August the coast is livelier than the town by a wide margin, so plan dinner accordingly.
Booking well
With nine hotels in our 2026 scans, one busy weekend changes the whole picture. Book weeks ahead for August, for the Bakhmaro horse-racing days and for any national holiday; outside those windows you can often arrive and negotiate on the spot. If a rate sits far above the roughly US$108 our scans started at, you are probably looking at a coastal or spa property rather than the town.
Ask three questions before you confirm: heating and hot water for the damp half of the year, air conditioning for July and August, and whether breakfast is included — in a guesthouse it usually is, and it is usually good. Confirm your arrival time as well, because most small places have no reception desk, only a phone number and someone who will come to meet you.
Carry cash. Cards work in supermarkets and larger hotels, but village guesthouses, marshrutkas and market stalls run on lari, and ATMs thin out quickly outside the centre. Finally, match the booking to the timetable: if you are on the morning train or an early minibus toward the mountains, sleep in the centre rather than by the sea.
