Qvareli for hotel guests

It is a small, low-rise town: a market, the house-museum of Ilia Chavchavadze, who was born here, and the Kindzmarauli micro-zone that made the name known. Most people stay two or three nights for the citadel at Gremi, the monastery at Nekresi, the rock-cut tunnel cellars north of town and a swim in one of the lakes. Supply is thin and resort-heavy: our 2026 scans covered 14 properties, with from-rates opening around US$175 and a median from-price of roughly US$271. All hotels in Qvareli →

I Had an amazing stay at Kvareli Lake Resort with friends. The location is absolutely stunning with beautiful views of the lake, mountains, and Alazani Valley. The food was great - they offer both Georgian and European cuisine with excellent quality. The service was high class throughout our stay, and all the staff were very friendly and helpful. Our rooms were cozy and comfortable, perfect for a relaxing getaway. The resort has excellent facilities including a spa, both indoor and outdoor pools. We had a joyful trip to the lake where we enjoyed water bicycles - such a fun activity! Highly…

We stayed at this hotel—what a wonderful experience! The views are simply number one, overlooking the valley and the lake. As a suggestion, it would be great to have a beach or at least a designated swimming area in the lake—it would make relaxation and leisure so much better. Right now, the only way to swim is if you're waterskiing. We wish the hotel growth and even more new services for guests!

Planning your trip to Qvareli

When to go

The best fortnight of the Qvareli year is rtveli, from roughly mid-September to mid-October: grapes arriving on trailers, the whole valley smelling of crushed skins, warm afternoons and nights cool enough for a blanket. It is also the tightest window for beds and the most expensive, so book two or three months ahead if you want a specific place.

July and August are hot — 33-35°C on the Alazani floor is normal and the town offers little shade. Domestic visitors fill the lakes on August weekends, so swim early or late, sightsee before eleven, and treat the middle of the day as cellar-and-shade time. The vineyard villages under the foothills run a few degrees kinder.

November to March is cheap, damp and very quiet. Snow rarely settles in the valley but fog does, resort pools and some restaurants close, and the last stretch up to Nekresi turns to mud. April and May are green and reasonably priced, with chakapuli on every menu and enough rain that you should pack a jacket.

Getting there and around

Qvareli is about 145 km from Tbilisi. Marshrutkas leave through the day from the Isani/Samgori side of the city and take roughly three hours for something in the 10-15 GEL range; from Telavi it is about an hour, from Gurjaani less. There is no useful passenger train, and no airport closer than Tbilisi.

Driving, the valley route via Sagarejo, Gurjaani and Bakurtsikhe is the dependable one in every season. The Gombori pass shortcut to Telavi is prettier and faster but takes snow and thick fog in winter and is occasionally closed. Nothing crosses the Caucasus from here: the mountains behind the town are a wall, not a route.

In town you can walk from one end to the other in twenty minutes. Taxis handle everything else — on the order of 5-10 GEL for a hop inside town, 15-25 GEL out to the lakes, and 120-180 GEL for a driver for a full day of Gremi, Nekresi and cellars. Village marshrutkas run a few times daily and barely at all on Sundays.

Where to stay, zone by zone

Central Qvareli — the market, the Ilia Chavchavadze house-museum, a couple of cafés, the pharmacies — is where the cheapest rooms and small family-run places sit. You can buy bread, find a taxi and eat khinkali without planning anything. In return, the rooms are plain and the evenings go properly quiet after nine o'clock.

The strip north and east of town, along the foothills and the lakes, is resort country: gated grounds, pools, in-house restaurants and the rates that pull our median upward. It suits families and anyone who wants to arrive and stop moving. You will taxi in for anything urban, and in low season you should confirm the pool and kitchen are actually operating.

West along the Telavi road the vineyard villages — Gremi, Shilda, Eniseli, Akhalsopeli, Gavazi — have guesthouses with their own marani and breakfast poured from the family qvevri. This is the honest wine-country stay, but it needs a car, a taxi habit or a host who collects you. Zinobiani, the Udi village, is another quiet option.

If the numbers do not work, base yourself in Telavi, about 40 km away, or in Sighnaghi, and do Qvareli, Gremi and Nekresi as one long day. Both have deeper, cheaper hotel markets and more places to eat after dark. What you lose is the foothill air and the early light on the vines.

Eating and going out

Food here is Kakhetian and unfussy: mtsvadi grilled over vine cuttings, khinkali, chakapuli in spring, kotori, nadughi with mint, shoti pulled straight off the oven wall. Reckon on roughly 1.2-1.5 GEL per khinkali and 15-25 GEL for a hot main at 2025 prices, with portions built for a table rather than for one person.

This is the Kindzmarauli micro-zone, so the semi-sweet Saperavi is local and unironic; the dry Saperavi and the qvevri Rkatsiteli are usually the better drinking. Tastings at family cellars and at the rock-cut tunnel cellars north of town are best arranged a day ahead. Bottles start somewhere around 15-25 GEL at the source. Do not drive afterwards.

Nightlife, honestly, is a hotel restaurant and a bottle. The centre shuts down around ten, shops earlier, and there are no clubs. A village supra has to be ordered in advance, usually at a fixed per-person price, and is worth doing once. If you want a late drink on your terrace, buy it during the day.

Booking well

The market is tiny: our 2026 scans covered 14 properties, with from-rates opening around US$175 and a median from-price of roughly US$271 a night. That skew is resort-driven, and it means the genuine value — small guesthouses in the centre and the villages — goes first. Book early for rtveli and for any weekend between June and October.

Read the inclusions rather than the photographs. Pools are seasonal, resort restaurants sometimes close entirely from November, and an address in Qvareli can mean five kilometres out along an unlit road. Confirm dinner, transfers and Tbilisi airport pickups in writing with prices, and ask specifically whether breakfast is served in low season.

There are ATMs in the centre, but village guesthouses and cellars generally want cash lari. In winter, phone or message before you travel: small places really do shut out of season and listings do not always say so. Free cancellation is worth paying a little for here, because weather and road plans shift more than you expect.
