Planning your trip to Telavi

When to go

Telavi's year turns on the harvest. Rtveli, roughly from mid-September into late October, is when the Alazani Valley smells of crushed grapes, every marani is open and half the guesthouses will happily put you to work at the qvevri. It is also the one stretch when the town genuinely runs short of beds: weekend rates firm up and the best village rooms go weeks ahead.

May and June are the underrated months. The valley is green, the wall of the Greater Caucasus to the north is still white and visible on clear mornings, and spring cooking — chakapuli, lamb with tarragon and green plums — is at its best. Rooms are easy to find, the roads are dry, and you can walk the old streets without hunting for shade.

July and August are hot, usually low-to-mid thirties by mid-afternoon, though at Telavi's altitude the nights cool off far more kindly than they do in Tbilisi. Cellars are open but quiet, and the vineyards are simply working. This is when discounts appear: plan monasteries for the morning and tastings for the late afternoon.

Winter is honest and empty. December to March brings fog on the valley floor, occasional snow, a town that closes early, and the real chance that the Gombori Pass shuts for a day or two after heavy snowfall — the longer lowland highway stays open. Check that your room has proper heating rather than one tired wall unit.

Getting there and around

Marshrutkas to Telavi leave Tbilisi from Samgori (Navtlughi) station throughout the day, take roughly two to two and a half hours over the Gombori Pass, and cost on the order of 10–15 GEL. They tend to fill up rather than follow a strict clock, so travel in the morning. The Telavi stand sits beside the bazaar, five minutes' walk from the fortress.

There are two roads from the capital: the shorter Gombori Pass, winding and genuinely beautiful, and the longer lowland route via Sagarejo and Gurjaani, which drivers switch to in bad weather. A private car for the transfer costs several times the marshrutka fare, and a hired driver for a full day around the valley typically lands in the low hundreds of lari.

Telavi itself is walkable end to end in twenty minutes. Beyond that you need wheels: town taxis are a few lari, Tsinandali or Ikalto perhaps 15–25 GEL each way, Alaverdi and the two Shuamta monasteries a little more. Village marshrutkas exist but run thin and stop early, so fix a return time with a driver before you set out.

Where to stay, zone by zone

The centre — Erekle II Square, Rustaveli Street and the lanes around Batonis Tsikhe — holds most of the town's hotels. You are walking distance from the fortress, the 900-year-old plane tree, the bazaar and the kitchens that stay open latest. It is also where the marshrutkas and the morning trade make their noise, so ask for a room off the street side.

Nadikvari, the slope below the park, is the view address. Rooms on that terrace look straight north over the Alazani Valley to the Caucasus, and it is a five-minute climb back into the centre. Steep in places and quiet after dark — the right choice if you want the balcony to be the evening's entertainment.

Around the bazaar and the bus stand you find the cheapest guesthouses and small family hotels: practical if you arrive late or leave at dawn, less charming otherwise. Kurdgelauri and the outer roads towards Tsinandali have newer, larger hotels with parking and pools, which suit people with a car far better than bus travellers.

Then there are the villages — Tsinandali, Kisiskhevi, Vardisubani, Shalauri, Ruispiri and others within a quarter of an hour of town — where family wineries rent rooms and cook dinner. This is the best version of a Kakheti night, and the least flexible: you will need a car or a taxi for anything at all after supper.

Eating and going out

Kakhetian food is the point of being here. Mtsvadi grilled over vine cuttings, khinkali priced by the piece at a lari or so, badrijani with walnut paste, shoti bread straight from a wood-fired tone, and chakapuli in spring. Portions assume a table of six, so two people should order noticeably less than instinct suggests.

Wine arrives by the jug as often as the bottle. Amber qvevri Rkatsiteli and Kisi, dark Saperavi; a tasting flight at a cellar usually runs to a couple of dozen lari, and a good bottle to take away is somewhere around 15–30 GEL. Family maranis in the villages often pour generously for little more than the price of the meal.

Nightlife is thin, and that is not a complaint. There are a few bars in the centre and restaurant terraces on the Nadikvari side, but kitchens generally wind down by ten or eleven, earlier out of season. A late night in Telavi belongs at a guesthouse table with the host's wine, not out on the street.

Booking well

Across 35 properties in our 2026 scans, Telavi rooms started at about US$74 a night and the typical from-price sat near US$99 — modest by Georgian standards, but remember that a from-price is the smallest room on the quietest date. Harvest weekends and the better village wine houses sit above that; a midweek February night sits below it.

Book the harvest well in advance: six to eight weeks is not paranoid for late September and October, particularly for anything with a vineyard view. The rest of the year you can usually arrange a room a few days out, and walking in works in winter — though a good share of the small places simply close until spring.

Confirm the practical things in writing: heating in winter, air conditioning in summer, whether breakfast and dinner are included at a guesthouse, and whether parking exists if you have driven. Cards are normal in town hotels and unreliable in village maranis, so carry lari. Ask your host to arrange a driver for the day — it is usually cheaper and better than a booked tour.
