Planning your trip to Tsqaltubo
When to go
Late spring and early autumn are the sweet spots. May and June deliver warm mid-twenties days, hillsides that look almost tropical, and nights cool enough to sleep with the window open. September and October match them and add the Imeretian harvest — grapes, walnuts, persimmon — to every market table. These are also the months when the handful of spa hotels fill up first.
July and August turn hot and heavy: 30–35°C with humidity that makes it feel worse, afternoon thunderstorms, and mosquitoes near the park's water channels. It still works — Prometheus Cave stays around 14°C year-round and Sataplia's trails are shaded — but Kutaisi airport is at its busiest and rooms are at their dearest.
Winter is mild rather than cold, roughly 3–12°C, but grey and persistently wet. That matters less here than elsewhere, because the whole point of Tsqaltubo is indoors and the mineral baths run all year. The town empties out, a few guesthouses and restaurants close, and prices bottom out. Come for treatments, not for atmosphere.
Whatever month you choose, plan around rain. Imereti is one of the wettest corners of Georgia and late autumn is the heaviest stretch. Storms close Okatse and Martvili canyons for safety, and high water can suspend the boat section inside Prometheus. Waterproof shoes matter more than a smart jacket.
Getting there and around
Kutaisi International Airport is why many travellers end up here at all: it sits about 25 km away, roughly half an hour by road, and a taxi should run somewhere near 50–60 GEL. The budget-airline shuttles go to Kutaisi city rather than Tsqaltubo, so either pre-book a transfer through your hotel or change vehicles in town.
From Kutaisi, minibuses to Tsqaltubo leave frequently through the day, take 20–30 minutes and cost a couple of lari; a taxi is more like 25–30 GEL. From Tbilisi, allow four hours by train or minibus to Kutaisi, then hop across. A rail branch to Tsqaltubo exists, but service has been intermittent — treat Kutaisi as your station.
In town you walk. The circular park is the centre of everything, and most bathhouses, sanatoria and guesthouses sit on or just off its ring; short taxi hops cost around 5–7 GEL. Ride-hailing apps cover Kutaisi and usually reach Tsqaltubo, though drivers thin out after dark. For Okatse, Kinchkha and Martvili, hire a car or a driver for the day.
Where to stay, zone by zone
The Central Park ring is the obvious default. Everything Tsqaltubo is known for — the numbered bathhouses, the balneological centre, the colonnades and the great derelict sanatoria — is a ten-minute walk away, and the restored spa hotels and better guesthouses cluster here. It is completely silent after dark, which some people love and others find eerie.
East of the park, along the road towards Kutaisi, is the working town: the market, bakeries, pharmacies and minibus stops. Rooms here are the cheapest and the most ordinary, often a family guesthouse with a garden. You trade spa-hotel polish for shops open at eight in the morning and easier onward transport.
Out towards Kumistavi and Prometheus Cave, and on the northern fringes, you will find cottages and small new hotels with more garden than street. They suit drivers and families; without a car you will be calling taxis for every meal. Check the exact distance to the park before booking — addresses here spread across several villages.
Kutaisi is the honest alternative: 25 minutes away, far more rooms and restaurants, and real evening life. If caves and Gelati are your priority, base yourself there. Stay in Tsqaltubo if you want the water, the ruins and the quiet.
Eating and going out
Eat Imeretian. That means imeruli khachapuri with the cheese right through it, lobio in a clay pot, mchadi, badrijani with walnut paste and plenty of ajika. A sit-down meal at a local place runs roughly 25–40 GEL a head, and khinkali is around a lari and a half each. The market is cheaper still for fruit, cheese and bread.
Learn the rhythm before you get hungry. Tsqaltubo has a handful of restaurants, several hotel dining rooms and a few cafés on the park ring, and most kitchens wind down by about 21:00 or 22:00. On summer weekends tour groups can fill the bigger halls, so reserve a table or eat early.
Imereti makes its own wine — Tsolikouri, Tsitska and Krakhuna, often amber and qvevri-fermented, lighter and sharper than Kakhetian reds. A litre from a market barrel costs around 10–15 GEL. For bars or live music, take the 25-minute ride into Kutaisi and taxi back.
If you are booked onto a course of treatments, ask whether your hotel includes canteen meals; several working sanatoria still feed guests on a fixed schedule — cheap and filling, but not the reason you came to Georgia.
